In early August HMS teachers returned, with our annual ritual of preparing the classroom for a new school year. With this unending heatwave we have also re-organized our normal daily schedule to accommodate the blistering afternoons. We’re used to spending the end of our school-day on our lovely playground, but this month we’re enjoying the relatively cool mornings outside, complete with dance parties, digging, a birthday circle and, of course, lots of water breaks.
But after nap time, when the heat outside is its most relentless, we remain inside these serene walls where a world of discovery awaits. The calm chill of 78 degrees is just fine to start another year of learning and growing.
And how better to stimulate the young mind just back from a summer vacation? We’ve stocked our shelves with copious materials all about transportation. Yes, we’re learning about planes, trains and automobiles. And cranes and balloons and ships… There is so much to explore!

Working through this Texas weather has proven again how teachers and parents can join forces to ensure that the children are well-prepared for whatever challenges and adventures lie ahead. And we are reminded that basic comfort is paramount to anything we do.
